Myth:
New York schools are 38th in the nation in terms of results.
Fact:
That figure is cherry-picked from a statistic that shows New York schools are 38th in graduation rates, not in overall result. Ranking states solely by graduation rates is misleading because it compares New York, with its high standards, to states with minimal requirements. And it ignores the reality that New York state has been recognized in an independent Education Week report — which is a well-respected watch dog on schools — as second in the nation for improving graduation rates. That improvement has happened even as the state has dramatically increased standards and graduation requirements.
Education Week does a rigorous analysis every year of ALL the different measures of educational quality. New York is always a leader. And this year, Education Week finds that New York is ranked third in the entire nation!
